Der Pastellmaler Andreas Joseph Chandelle wurde als Sohn des wohlhabenden Weinhändlers Nicolas Chandelle (1706-1749) und seiner Frau Gertrud geb. Donnet, Tochter des in Frankfurt tätigen Bildhauers Andreas Donnet (1682–1748) geboren. Er hatte zwei Brüder, der eine wurde Bischoff von Speyer. Am 5.10.1773 heiratete er Anna Rosina Wiesen, eine Tochter des Weinhändlers Johann Christof Wiesen, das Ehepaar hatte 8 Kinder. Die dritte Tochter Maria Dorothea Walpurgis Chandelle (1784-1866) war ebenfalls Pastellmalererin.
