Également homme politique, envoyé à plusieurs reprises en mission diplomatique. - Anobli par le Wurtemberg et la Bavière en 1817 et 1822, avec le titre de baron de Cottendorf. Sa correspondance pour la période 1797-1832, notamment avec Goethe, Schiller et les plus grands auteurs de son temps, a été publiée en 1979-1983
