Avocat de formation. Voyage à plusieurs reprises en Europe, notamment en France (1785, 1792, 1799, 1801, 1825). Rachète en déc. 1787 l'officine "J. G. Cottasche Buchhandlung" fondée par son ancêtre Johann Georg I Cotta à Tübingen en 1659. Fondateur de plusieurs périodiques dont l'"Allgemeine Zeitung" en 1798 et le "Morgenblatt" en 1807. Également homme politique, envoyé à plusieurs reprises en mission diplomatique. Anobli par le Wurtemberg et la Bavière en 1817 et 1822, avec le titre de baron de Cottendorf. Sa correspondance pour la période 1797-1832, notamment avec Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich von Schiller et les plus grands auteurs de son temps, a été publiée en 1979-1983
