English poet and novelist who gave witty accounts of English life in the early 19th century. Her brother George was appointed governor-general of India in 1835. He was unmarried, and Eden and [her sister] Frances accompanied him to Calcutta in March 1836 and carried out the official duties of the governor’s lady, with Emily, the elder, assuming chief responsibility; returned to England in 1842
