text: "nato a Benevento, da Giacinto e Beatrice Bianchi, trascorse l'infanzia a Firenze e ricevette la prima formazione scolastica dagli Scolopi; nel 1713 si iscrisse alla facoltà di Medicina di Pisa dove seguì anche corsi di matematica e filosofia, si laureò nel 1716 e dopo un anno a Porto Longone (1718, Isola d'Elba), esercitò privatamente a Firenze. Interessato alle lingue classiche, si dedicò allo studio di spagnolo, francese e inglese, greco antico, arabo ed ebraico, conoscenza di cui diede prova anche nei diari, le Effemeridi, che tenne con regolarità a partire dal 1715; nel lungo viaggio che nel 1722 lo portò in Francia, Olanda, e infine Inghilterra dove si trattenne esercitando la sua professione fino al 1826, ebbe modo di conoscere Newton e altri scienziati; approfondita così la conoscenza della lingua, quando tornò in Italia divenne il medico di riferimento della comunità inglese che lo accolse nel 1732, anche nelle fila della loggia massonica fiorentina. Grazie all'aiuto del marchese C.Rinuccini e del conte G.Rucellai ottenne una cattedra di medicina a Pisa dal 1727, cui seguirono nel 1731 lo Studio fiorentino, l'insegnamento di anatomia nell'ospedale di S. Maria Nuova nel 1736, e nel 1751 anche quello di chirurgia, mentre continuò a fornire pareri e consulenze a diverse istituzioni e personalità. Nel 1734 fu con A. Micheli uno dei fondatori della rinnovata Società botanica fiorentina e riorganizzo l'Orto Botanico. Curioso di filologia e paleografia, non solo frequentò molte biblioteche per lo studio di testi classici e manoscritti che poi pubblicò o di cui trasse copia, ma raccolse anche un erbario e una collezione di \"curiosità naturali\"; questa propensione antiquaria gli meritò nel 1738 l'incarico di antiquario granducale delle collezioni ex-medicee e assieme a G.Targioni-Tozzetti, predispose le raccolte della Magliabechiana per l'apertura al pubblico, avvenuta nel 1747. Da un primo matrimonio (1728) con Gaetana Debi, morta ventenne, non ebbe figli; risposatosi nel 1733 o 1734 con Teresa Piombanti, ebbe Beatrice e l'erede Raimondo insieme al quale pubblicò la collezione chirurgica di Niceta tratta dal codice della Laurenziana, da lui studiato poco dopo il 1720; sarà proprio Raimondo l'artefice della dispersione della sua biblioteca ricca di 16.000 fra codici e volumi e nota a molti letterati e personalità del suo tempo."
