Obwohl Leinwandportäts in Italien bereits um 1530 aufkamen, deuten verschiedener Indizien - der dargestellte Faltenkragen kam erst nach 1560 auf, der Typus der Feldbinde erst Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts - darauf hin, daß das Porträt nicht zeitgenössisch ist.Nach einem Luftangriff im April 1945 wurde das Bild beschädigt aus dem von Balthasar Neumann gebauten Hutten-Schloß Steinbach bei Lohr geborgen. Dabei ging auch die ursprüngliche Bildunterschrift verloren. Nach einer Zeugenaussage von Ilse von Hutten soll diese geheißen haben "Philipp von Hutten. Vice-König von Indien. 1546 von Carvesal ermordet. Der Mörder aber gevierteilt". Diese sachlich fehlerhafte Unterschrift legt ebenfalls eine spätere Entstehungszeit nahe.
