Compì i primi studi a Mantova e poi a Padova che, dopo aver partecipato ai moti studenteschi e civili del 1848, lasciò per per trasferirsi prima a Milano e poi, come destinazione del suo esilio, a Parigi. Qui conobbe Guglielmo Libri (1803-1869) che lo introdusse e appassionò al mondo della bibliofilia. Non appena gli si presentò l'occasione (1856) tornò in Italia dove insegnò Fisica in diversi Istituti di ricerca e Atenei. La sua attività didattica si svolse principalmente con gli insegnamenti di Fisica Sperimentale e con quelli di Storia della Scienza; in questo ambito, studiò le opere di Galilei e i manoscritti di Leonardo, di cui curò la trascrizione dai manoscritti conservati in diverse biblioteche italiane e straniere. Nel 1873 venne incaricato di dirigere la Biblioteca Casanatense e di Roma e nel 1877, per un breve periodo, diresse la neonata biblioteca Vittorio Emanuele II (l'attuale Biblioteca nazionale Centrale di Roma)."
