Libraire ; éditeur et marchand d'estampes et de cartes. - Fils de Thomas I Bowles (16..-1721), menuisier et marchand d'estampes à Londres. Frère puîné du libraire, graveur et éditeur de cartes et d'estampes Thomas II Bowles (1690?-1767). Aurait commencé à exercer dès 1720 environ. Publie plusieurs catalogues de son fonds. Décédé en 1779. La majeure partie de son fonds passe à Robert Wilkinson, qui lui succède
Travaille souvent en association avec son frère aîné Thomas II Bowles, puis avec son propre fils Carington Bowles (1724-1793) de 1753 à 1764 sous la raison "John Bowles and son"
