Pauline Clairmont was the companion of her aunt Claire’s last years in Florence. From 1870 to 1877 she lived with Claire as a paying guest; therafter, until Claire’s death in 1879, as a housekeeper without pay. She was the prototype for Tina in Henry James’s Aspern Papers
