text: "Portrait of Jonathan Dayton (1760-1824), American politicianJonathan Dayton's portrait by Henry Harrison is based on a profile drawing of the Speaker, also in the House Collection. This work was among the first paintings commissioned following the mandate for the institution to acquire oil paintings of each former Speaker. The Harrison portrait shows a rather more polished individual than the original drawing, but retains the profile format, unusual among the Speaker portraits."
