The album relates to the Middleton family of South Carolina, from which it descended until Hillwood purchased it in 2004. Williams Middleton—who was secretary to his father, Henry Middleton, the American minister to St. Petersburg from 1820 to 1830—assembled this album. The artist of many of the watercolors, most of which are unsigned, is likely Middleton's sister, Maria Henrietta, who studied painting during her years in St. Petersburg with her governess, Madame Mathes, who also painted miniatures. Two watercolors, including this portrait of the Countess Bobrinsky, are signed by the well-known Russian watercolorist Petr Sokolov. The portraits are of Russians and people in the foreign community who were close associates of the Middleton family. Their portraits provide an extraordinary commentary on the fashion and hairstyles of the 1820s.' rights: 'Brian Searby or anonymous (see filename) / http://www.hillwoodmuseum.org/collection/search?s=Middleton%20%20Album -- Public domain -- http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monsieur de Lagrenee by Brian Searby (Middleton Album).jpg' searchTerm: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/File:Monsieur de Lagrenee by Brian Searby (Middleton Album).jpg typeOfResource: dpct external: - auth: GND catRules: rda country: DE date: 20200416 id: 1075768055 foundIn: - BNF - Wikipedia gender: b geoNote: - intro: ctry lang: ger text: Frankreich - authority: iso3166 intro: geon lang: und text: FR heading: - part: - entry: Lagrené - firstname: Théodore - nonsort: de usedBy: - GyFmDB name: - part: - entry: Lagrené - firstname: Marie-Melchior-Joseph-Théodore - nonsort: de typeOfName: varn - part: - entry: Lagrené - firstname: Théodore-Marie-Melchior-Joseph - nonsort: de typeOfName: varn - part: - entry: Lagrené - firstname: Théodose Marie Melchior Joseph - nonsort: de typeOfName: varn - part: - entry: Lagrené - firstname: Théodose-Marie-Melchior-Joseph - nonsort: de typeOfName: varn place: - id: cnl00006842 note: - lang: ger text: Geburtsort part: - name: Amiens tmp: (GND)4085690-2 typeOfPlace: brth - id: cnl00032963 note: - lang: ger text: Sterbeort part: - name: Paris tmp: (GND)4044660-8 typeOfPlace: deat typeOfEntry: 0 meta: history: - timestamp: 2016-12-13T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2018-12-16T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2019-05-03T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2019-09-26T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2019-11-07T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2020-03-10T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2020-04-23T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2020-09-14T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2024-02-08T12:00:00Z possibleMatch: - id: cnp01314297 similarity: 3 status: n
