      text: 1879 erhielt er einen Ruf nach Dresden an die neugegründete Professur für Botanik am Dresdner Polytechnikum (seit 1890 TH). Ab 1890 war er Direktor des Botanischen Gartens. Beiden Stellungen blieb er ein halbes Jahrhundert bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1920 treu.
