Emigrierte in jungen Jahren in die Vereinigten Staaten; im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg arbeitete sie als Krankenschwester und nahm eine führende Rolle in der privaten Hilfsorganisation United States Sanitary Commission (USSC) ein, nach dem Krieg arbeitete sie im Armeekrankenhaus in Portsmouth Grove; sie war eine der bekanntesten Übersetzerinnen ihrer Zeit, v. a. von Werken französischer Autoren ins Englische, u. a. übersetzte sie das gesamte Werk von Honoré de Balzac
