Student at St Mary's Coll., St Andrews 1554-5, lic. 1555-6, examiner Fac. Of Arts 1556 and 1558, taught S. Andrews, to France to study civil law at Bourges, returned 1566, to be principal King's Coll. Aberdeen 1569 - 1583, worked with A. Melvill in new reformation of univs. Glasgow and Aberdeen. Brother to the Baron of Arbuthnot, and parson of Arbuthnot and Logy. Buried in the College Church of Aberdeen, 20th Oct 1583.From Provenance Catalogue: Arbuthnot studied for his M.A. at St Andrews, 1557(?5)-60, and later studied law at Bourges. He returned to Scotland in 1566 and was appointed principal of King's College in 1569. He held several charges and was Moderator of the General Assembly in 1573 and 1577. Well-respected but not a remarkable principal, Arbuthnot was at once poet, mathematician, divine, lawyer and physician, as reflected in the selection of his books now held by Aberdeen University Library. He died in 1583, aged 45 years.
