Ältester Sohn von William Carew; trat sehr früh in die Armee ein; seit 1540 Kapitän von Fort Risban (Ruysbane) im Hafen von Calais; danach diente er abwechselnd in der Armee und bei der Flotte; 1545 kommandierte er die Mary Rose, das Flaggschiff der Flotte unter Heinrich VIII.; am 19. Juli 1545 sank das Schiff während eines Gefechts mit den Franzosen beim Auslaufen aus dem Hafen von Portsmouth
