      text: "Church of England clergyman and radical protestant thinker. Educated at St Werburgh's Abbey School, Chester, then Brasenose College, Oxford, 1536. B.A., 1541, M.A., 1544. Senior student of Christ Church, 1547, then Lady Margaret professor of divinity there. Leading member of the circle around Petro Martire Vermigli. Presented to the rectory of Adel, Yorkshire, 1553. Forced to leave Oxford after Queen Mary's ascension - travelled to Strasbourg, Frankfurt, then Geneva 1555 where he worked with John Knox as minister of a separate English exile congregation. This congregation became the largest of the English exile churches, and produced the Geneva Bible. Whilst in Geneva, Goodman published a tract justifying resistance of ungodly rulers and questioning the legitimacy of female ones . Returned to England 1559, but remained in hiding, and became minister of Ayr for a short while before being translated to St Andrews in 1560. Forced to leave the country in 1565 after the chaseabout raid and his association with the earl of Moray. Served as minister in Newcastle in winter 1565-6, then left for Ireland March 1566 as chaplain to the new lord deputy. Returned to Chester 1568. Summoned before the ecclesiastical commission 1571 and made to retract his resistance theories and submit on ecclesiastical matters. Remained in Chester for the rest of his life, heavily involved in local affairs. Appointed to Aldford parish and the archdeaconry of Richmond. Died Chester, 1603. Left a bequest to the city of Geneva."
