humanist, antiekhandelaar; publiceerde in 1570 de wereldatlas, "Theatrum orbis terrarum" ('Theatre of the world'); publiceerde in 1579, de beroemde regionale kaart van het Caraïbisch gebied (waarop het eiland Sint-Maarten staat afgebeeld, als 1e keer door iemand uit 'de Nederlanden'); vanaf 1579: hoofdkosmograaf aan het hof van koning Filips II van Spanje (en de overzeese gebieden der Nieuwe Wereld, alsook erfopvolger der Portugese troon en overzeese gebieden)
