General Note

Libraire et éditeur. - Natif de Kirkby Ravensworth (Yorkshire). D'abord destiné à la médecine, il travaille dans la librairie à Londres, collabore avec James Asperne pour l'"European Magazine", et devient éditeur vers 1830. Se fait le champion de la liberté de la presse, de l'éducation populaire, du progrès sous toutes ses formes, et fréquente les cercles radicaux. Publie notamment en 1818 "Church-of-Englandism" et en 1821 "The Elements of the art of packing", deux ouvrages de Jeremy Bentham. Lance le "Railway Magazine" en 1835. Décédé à Londres en juin 1868. Son fils William Wilson lui succède et publie sous la raison "Effingham Wilson (and company)" jusqu'en 1897, puis sous le seul nom de "Wilson". La maison sera reprise en 1932 par la firme "Isaac Pitman and sons"
