text: "Imprimeur-libraire ; journaliste et propriétaire de périodiques. - Natif de Newton, près de Rugby (Warwickshire), et fils d'un fabricant de chaussures de Rugby. Exclu pour indiscipline de son école de Rugby, il part tenter sa chance à Londres. D'abord apprenti de l'imprimeur londonien Freeman Collins à partir de fév. 1710, puis responsable de la publication et de l'impression du \"Norwich Post\" à Norwich en 1712, il revient travailler à Londres, à la mort de son maître (1713), en qualité de compagnon chez l'imprimeur John Barber. Quittancé en mars 1717. Marié en sept. 1716, il trouve aussi grâce à son épouse un emploi de postier (1721) puis d'inspecteur des affranchissements postaux (1723-1745). Établi imprimeur au plus tard en 1722 (prend alors son premier apprenti). Rédacteur de nouvelles, il est emprisonné 11 jours en mars 1727 et condamné à une amende pour avoir contrevenu au privilège du Parlement en diffusant les comptes rendus des séances de la Chambre des Communes auprès du \"Gloucester Journal\". Lance en janv. 1731 le \"Gentleman's Magazine\", dont il assure la direction jusqu'à sa mort. Investit aussi à partir de 1743 dans une manufacture de coton à Northampton. Ami de l'écrivain Samuel Johnson. Propriétaire de plusieurs périodiques. Décédé à Londres en janv. 1754. Son \"Gentleman's Magazine\" sera géré par la famille jusqu'en 1778 et son entreprise par son gendre David Henry jusqu'à sa mort (1792)"
