      text: "Mathématicien, astronome, cartographe. - Elève du scientifique Johann Georg Tralles à la Hole Schule de Berne, il s'intéressa à la mensuration du territoire suisse par triangulation et fût chargé en 1798 du cadastre suisse, entreprise abandonnée après l'effondrement de la République hélvétique. - Emigré aux Etats-Unis en 1805, il est chargé en 1807 de mettre en place l'US Coast Survey, projet qu'il ne reprendra qu'en 1832, après l'échec du levé cotier entrepris par la Marine. - Sous sa direction, et avec de nouveaux instruments, l'US Coast Survey cartographie plus de 8000 mille carrés"
