Marin et voyageur. - Neveu de John Ross, il accompagne Parry dans ses expéditions de 1819 à 1827, son oncle en 1829. - Découvre le pôle magnétique en 1831. - En 1839, il dirige le voyage de l'"Erebus" et du "Terror" en Antarctique et y découvre la Terre Victoria et le mont Erèbe. - Il participe aux recherches de Franklin en 1848 et 1849 en vain
