      text: "Libraire ; libraire de Sa Très Sacrée Majesté [Charles II puis Jacques II] (1660) ; \"stationer to the Court\" (1663). - Fils d'un tailleur d'Oxford ; baptisé à Oxford le 14 ou le 15 oct. 1601. En apprentissage à Londres chez le libraire Josias Harrison à partir de fév. 1617 ; quittancé par le libraire John Grismond en août 1627, il s'établit la même année. Première publication connue en 1629. Emprisonné à la Fleet en août-oct. 1645 pour avoir diffusé des écrits contre le Parlement. Publie à la fin de 1648 la première édition de l'\"Eikôn basilikê\" attribuée au roi Charles Ier, alors prisonnier du Parlement. Plusieurs fois déféré devant le Conseil d'État en 1649-1650 et 1653-1654 pour publications sans permission. Reçoit le 29 nov. 1660 du roi Charles II le privilège exclusif d'imprimer les œuvres de son père Charles Ier. Admis au sein de la \"Stationers' Company\" sur intervention du roi en mai 1663. Reçoit en sept. 1666 une indemnisation de ses pertes à la suite du Grand Incendie de Londres. Beau-père du libraire Richard Chiswell. \"Master\" de la \"Stationers' Company\" en 1673-1674. On le dit \"dans sa 86e année\" lors de son décès (sépulture 15 nov. 1686, Londres) ; sa veuve Margaret Royston lui succède ; une publication au moins porte cependant encore le nom de son mari en 1687"
