Freund von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy und Karl Immermann
Jurist, Musikschriftsteller, Musikkritiker, Komponist, polit. Publizist; seit 1837 Professor für Musiktheorie und Ästhetik an der Königlichen Musikschule in Den Haag; seit 1840 Professor an der Royal Academy of Music in London; einer der Hauptführer des Wiener Oktoberaufstands von 1848; wurde nach Niederschlagung des Aufstandes verhaftet, zum Tode verurteilt und zusammen mit Hermann Jellinek vor dem Neutor in Wien erschossen; 1971 wurde die Bechergasse in Wien-Favoriten nach ihm benannt
