Robert Bowyer war eigentlich Miniaturmaler, aber er unterstützte auch Buchprojekte und war als Verleger tätig

Libraire, éditeur d'estampes et peintre ; aquarelliste du roi d'Angleterre et peintre miniaturiste de la reine d'Angleterre (1785-1805). Natif de Portsmouth, baptisé le 18 juin 1758 ; fils d'un charpentier naval. D'abord employé chez un négociant à Portsmouth puis à Londres. Se forme à la peinture en miniature à Londres. Expose à la "Royal Academy" de 1783 à 1828. Réalise de nombreux portraits et se lance parallèlement dans l'édition et le commerce des estampes et des ouvrages illustrés. Publie notamment à partir de 1793 une "History of England" illustrée. Membre de la Société missionnaire baptiste. En difficulté financière à la fin de sa carrière, il se retire en partie à la campagne. Décédé à Byfleet (Surrey) en juin 1834. Mary Parkes, son ancienne servante puis associée, reprend la maison d'édition.
