text: "Imprimeur-libraire ; fondeur et graveur de caractères ; imprimeur de la ville de Londres (1564). - Natif de Dulwich (Suffolk). Apprenti chez l'imprimeur londonien Thomas Raynold. Travaille d'abord en association avec William Seres jusqu'en 1549. Ouvre ensuite sa propre imprimerie à Aldersgate. De confession protestante, publie principalement des ouvrages religieux, notamment l'\"English Catechism\" et \"Actes and monuments\" de John Foxe, mais aussi des éditions musicales (psaumes). À l'avènement de Marie Tudor, en 1553, il publie des impressions clandestines sous le pseudonyme de Michael Wood et à l'adresse de Rouen (\"Roane\"). En oct. 1554, il est arrêté et emprisonné à la Tour de Londres. Libéré l'année suivante, il est autorisé à reprendre ses activités d'imprimeur. De nombreux privilèges lui sont octroyés par la reine Élisabeth Ire, notamment pour l'\"English Catechism\", les \"ABC\" et les \"Metrical Psalms\". En 1560, il publie le premier livre de musique en anglais. En 1564, il est nommé imprimeur officiel de la ville de Londres et en 1580 il devient \"master\" de la \"Stationers' Company\". Les dernières années de sa vie sont marquées par le conflit qui l'oppose à ses confrères londoniens en raison de son quasi-monopole sur l'édition. Décédé à Walden (Essex) le 23 juillet 1584 à l'âge de 62 ans"
