Libraire. Originaire d'Écosse, il fait probablement son apprentissage à Édimbourg, avant de s'installer à Londres en 1728. Réputé pour sa générosité envers les auteurs qu'il publie. Bien qu'il se soit retiré en 1767 au profit de son ancien apprenti et associé Thomas II Cadell, des éditions paraissent encore sous son nom jusqu'en 1769.
