Aurait été, jusqu'en 1684, apprenti de l'imprimeur londonien Andrew Sowle, quaker, dont il épouse la fille et dont il adopte la religion (abandonnée en 1702). Émigre aux États-Unis et s'installe à Philadelphie en 1685. En 1692, prenant parti pour George Keith, quaker dissident, il est accusé d'avoir imprimé sa défense. Il est incarcéré et son matériel confisqué. Acquitté faute de preuve, il part pour New York dont il devient le premier imprimeur et dont il fonde le premier journal : \"The New York Gazette\" (1725). Se retire en 1744 ; son ancien apprenti James Parker lui succède"
