John Preston war Musikinstrumentenbauer, Musikdrucker, -verleger und Musikalienhändler. Ca. 1789 trat sein Sohn Thomas in das Geschäft ein, das nun "Preston and Son" hieß. Von ca. 1798 - 1834 führte Thomas Preston es selbständig fort. - 1789 wurden die Lagerbestände und Druckplatten des Verlages Robert Bremner übernommen
