Libraire. - Né en 1683 d'après son autobiographie, "The Curliad", mais dit âgé de 72 ans lors de son décès (déc. 1747). En fréquents démêlés avec la justice, avec les auteurs et avec ses confrères, à partir de 1716, pour contrefaçons ; en 1725, condamné au pilori et à la mutilation des deux oreilles pour publication d'œuvres licencieuses ; en 1728, à une amende et à cinq mois de prison pour le même délit
