born Kirby Wiske, 1515, St. John's Coll., Cambr. 1530, student of Cheke, fellow 1537, appointed Greek reader 1538, tutor to Elizabeth as princess 1548-50, sec. to Richard Morysn, ambassador to emperor Charles V, travelled to Louvain, Cologne, Augsburg, some time in Italy , Brussels, returned 1553. Nominated librarian to king but never took up post, tutor to Elizabeth as queen. Known for his beautiful handwriting, taught penmanship to Lords Henry and Charles Brandon
