Imprimeur. A été apprenti imprimeur à Newcastle-upon-Tyne dont il est natif. Ami du graveur Thomas Bewick, dont il emploie de nombreux bois. Est le premier à établir une presse Stanhope dans son imprimerie en 1800. En association avec George Nicol de 1787 à 1819 ; avec John Boydell de 1790 à 1804 ; avec William Nicol de 1819 à 1822. William Nicol lui succède en 1822 après lui avoir été associé.
