General Note

storico, studioso, politico e collezionista scozzese. Dopo aver studiato al Trinity College di Cambridge, fu socio della Royal Society of Edimburgh e rettore prima dell'Università di St. Andrews (1862) e poi dell'Università di Edimburgo (1871). Nel 1865, dopo la morte dello zio John Maxwell, ereditò una parte del nome dello zio (Maxwell) e il titolo di 9° Baronetto di Pollock. Si preoccupò di dotare la residenza di Keir e quella di Londra (Grosvenor Square) di eleganti sale per la biblioteca. Membro della Philobiblon Society fin dai suoi esordi nel 1854, frequentò volentieri i circoli letterari londinesi e raccolse importanti collezioni di incisioni cinquescentesche e di opere d'arte.
