Autre(s) graphie(s) : Goltius ; Golzius. Imprimeur-libraire ; graveur, peintre et numismate. Natif de Wurtzbourg (Bavière) ou de Venlo (Limbourg, Pays-Bas), fils du peintre Roger Goltz, originaire de Wurtzbourg, et petit- fils du peintre Hubert Goltz dit le vieux. Se forme à la peinture, d'abord chez son père puis à Liège chez Lambert Lombard, qui lui enseigne aussi l'imprimerie et la gravure. Parcourt ensuite les Pays-Bas, l'Allemagne et la France pour y étudier les monnaies. S'établit à Anvers où il publie en 1557-1558 (Philippe II le nomme alors historiographe et peintre de la Maison d'Espagne) puis à Bruges (août 1558), où il est autorisé par la ville en mars 1562 à ouvrir un atelier de taille-douce et de typographie. Entre-temps, effectue un long voyage à travers l'Europe pour recueillir ou dessiner des médailles (nov. 1558 - nov. 1560). En relations constantes avec Christophe Plantin à partir de 1557. Exerce à la fois comme peintre, graveur, marchand d'antiquités, numismate et historien. Son atelier de Bruges a peut- être interrompu son activité entre 1568 et 1573 ; après cette dernière date, il n'imprime apparemment plus que ses propres ouvrages. En oct. 1578, son protecteur brugeois Marc Laurin, seigneur de Watervliet, s'engage par contrat à racheter une partie de son matériel et ses ouvrages, mais, persécuté par les calvinistes, il est banni et meurt ruiné à Calais en 1581. H. Goltzius, en difficulté, doit intenter un procès au frère de M. Laurin pour recouvrer l'argent qui lui est dû, procès qui ne sera gagné que par ses héritiers en 1592. Décédé à Bruges en mars 1583.
