S'inscrit en 1489 à l'université de Cracovie (Pologne), sous le nom de \"Mathias Martini\", et y étudie en compagnie de l'humaniste Heinrich Bebel, obtenant le titre de maître ès arts en 1494. Établi à Strasbourg, dont il reçoit le droit de bourgeoisie en 1502, il travaille comme correcteur chez l'imprimeur-libraire Martin II Flach, avec lequel il est apparenté par sa mère, puis, de 1505 à 1507, chez les imprimeurs-libraires Johann I Prüss et Johann I Knobloch. À partir de juin 1508, il exerce à son compte, donnant à sa production un caractère humaniste. Membre d'une société littéraire (\"sodalitas literaria\") de Strasbourg ; ami et correspondant d'humanistes, tels Beatus Rhenanus, Thomas Wolf et Érasme, dont il publie certains écrits. Travaille régulièrement de 1513 à 1517 pour des libraires de Vienne, les frères Leonhard et Lucas Alantsee. À partir de 1513, il emploie notamment en qualité de protes ou de correcteurs Andreas Cratander, Wolfgang Angst, Sebastian Murrho et Nikolaus Gerbel. En 1515, il reçoit des armoiries impériales portant une gerbe, allusion à son nom de famille, et la devise \"Tempus observa\", souvent abrégée en \"T.O.\", pour son édition des œuvres historiques d'Otto von Freising qu'il présente à l'empereur Maximilien Ier. Encore en activité en 1519. Vers la fin de sa vie, il travaille en association avec son neveu Lazarus Schürer, qui a été son apprenti et qui reprendra après sa mort (survenue peu avant le mois de mars 1520) une partie de son matériel typographique pour s'établir à son compte à Sélestat. Sa veuve Katharina Speich continue à exercer sous le nom de son mari pour le compte des héritiers de celui-ci jusqu'en 1522 au moins, puis, avec l'aide de Jakob Frölich, sans indication de nom, en publiant désormais surtout des écrits et occasionnels luthériens"
