Wirkte als Botaniker, bes. im Schwarzwald, in den Walliser, Graubündner, Tiroler und Kärtner Alpen. Mehrere Pflanzen sind nach ihm benannt worden. Die Bemühungen alpine Pflanzen auf dem Belchen anzusiedlen, trugen ihm den Namen "Belchenvater" ein.'
