We see Manheimer's wife Philippine (third from left, in the black dress), as well as his daughters and grandchildren. That Frau Manheimer commissioned the famous painter of Prussian historical scenes and imperial royalty to document this event, and that he accepted, suggests the esteem that even a milliner of women's clothing could command in the new Berlin. Manheimer had arrived in the city in 1836; he started his textile business, according to the firm's legend, with only the money he had won in a state lottery. Even before the founding of the empire, Manheimer's talent for industrial production and international marketing had allowed him to amass a considerable fortune. By the 1880s, his firm employed around 8,000 people, but it went bankrupt during the Great Depression, which began in 1929." rights: 'Anton von Werner / image zeno.org; description from Bildarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz [1] -- Public domain -- http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Der 70ste Geburtstag des Kommerzienrates Valentin Manheimer, von Anton von Werner, 1887.jpg' searchTerm: 'http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FilePath/File:Der 70ste Geburtstag des Kommerzienrates Valentin Manheimer, von Anton von Werner, 1887.jpg' typeOfResource: dpct external: - auth: GND country: DE date: 20090421 id: 137967896 foundIn: - NDB/ADB-online generalNote: - lang: ger text: Konfektionär; Textilkaufmann; Geheimer Kommerzienrat geoNote: - authority: iso3166 intro: geon lang: und text: DE - intro: ctry lang: ger text: Deutschland heading: - part: - entry: Manheimer - firstname: Valentin usedBy: - GyFmDB typeOfEntry: 0 meta: history: - timestamp: 2009-06-10T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2019-05-03T12:00:00Z - timestamp: 2024-02-08T12:00:00Z status: n
