Aus Amorbach (Odenwald); studierte an der Sorbonne bei Magister Johannes Heynlin, lebte als Druckergeselle oder Buchhändler in Venedig und ließ sich 1477 in Basel nieder. Als Drucker arbeitete er zunächst vielfach mit Jacob Wolff von Pforzheim, ab 1502 mit Johannes Petri und Johannes Froben zusammen und stand in enger Geschäftsverbindung zu Anton Koberger in Nürnberg, für den er große Druckaufträge ausführte. Sein Druck- und Verlagsprogramm war humanistisch ausgerichtet: wissenschaftlich einwandfreie Texte von Kirchenvätern, Klassikern und Humanisten. Dazu bediente er sich der Unterstützung durch Johannes de Lapide, Reuchlin, Sebastian Brant und Beatus Rhenanus. Jeweils ein Exemplar seiner Drucke schenkte er der Basler Kartause, aus der er Handschriften für die Textausgaben heranzog. Sein Sohn Basilius führte das Geschäft fort.       text: "Imprimeur-libraire. Fils de Peter Welcker, bourgmestre d'Amerbach (Franconie), son lieu de naissance. Étudie à la Sorbonne, à Paris, où il côtoie le milieu des humanistes, notamment ses compatriotes rhénans Johannes Heynlin et Joannes Reuchlin, et celui des imprimeurs allemands. Reçu bachelier en 1461 et licencié en 1462. Aurait accompagné J. Heynlin à Bâle en 1464 et serait revenu avec lui à Paris en 1467. Séjourne ensuite en Italie, à Venise où il se serait initié au métier d'imprimeur et où il est attesté en qualité de typographe chez Franz Renner et Nikolaus von Frankfurt alors associés (exercice 1473-1516) ; aurait également séjourné à Rome. Témoigne à Pérouse, en sept. 1477, dans un procès entre des imprimeurs allemands. Achète des poinçons à l'imprimeur Bernhard von Köln, actif à Trévise en 1477-1478. Âgé d'env. 40 ans lorsqu'il s'établit, à la fin de 1477 au plus tôt, à Bâle, où il est aussi connu sous le nom de Hans von Venedig (ou Joannes Veneticus) et où il exerce à partir de 1478 sous le nom de Johannes Amerbach. Achète en 1482 une maison dans le quartier du Klein Basel, tout près de la Chartreuse de Bâle qui le soutient activement et avec laquelle il entretient des relations intellectuelles (accès à la bibliothèque qu'il enrichit en retour d'éditions sorties de ses presses) et enfin où Johann Heynlin se retirera avec sa bibliothèque personnelle en 1487. Épouse la fille d'un conseiller de Bâle en 1483. Reçu bourgeois de la ville en mai 1484. Y introduit le caractère romain, en 1486. Meurt à la Chartreuse de Bâle, avant de pouvoir achever sa grande édition des Pères de l'Église. Ses fils, Bruno, Basilius I, Bonifacius Amerbach lui succèdent, mais l'officine semble avoir décliné rapidement : Bruno meurt de la peste à 36 ans, son puîné Basilius continue à travailler pour Johann Froben, tandis que Bonifacius devient professeur de droit à l'université de Bâle. Pendant les années 1480 et avant 1492, Johannes Amerbach travaille en association avec Jakob Wolff (de Pforzheim). Associé ensuite avec Johann Petri et, vers 1500, avec Johann Froben qui les rejoint. Dirige de fait ce triumvirat des \"Trois Johann\". Collabore également avec Anton I Koberger, de Nuremberg.
