Sohn des Pariser Druckers Christian Wechel, dessen Geschäft er seit 1553 weiterführte; verließ wegen seines calvinistischen Bekenntnisses kurz vor der Bartholomäusnacht mit seiner Familie Paris und ließ sich 1572 in Frankfurt als Drucker nieder. Seinen Schwiegersöhnen Marnius und Aubry hinterließ er ein blühendes Unternehmen, das sie weiterführten.'

Devenu protestant, il refuse en 1562 de prêter serment et de faire profession de foi dans la religion catholique et est chassé de Paris ; Nicolas Chesneau lui succède. Est mis en prison en août 1568. En 1569, certains de ses livres sont brûlés ou confisqués, et il demande à habiter Strasbourg. Revient à Paris qu'il quitte définitivement en 1572 après avoir échappé de peu au massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy. S'installe à Francfort dont il devient bourgeois en déc. 1572. Mort de la peste en oct. 1581. Ses gendres Jean I Aubry et Claude de Marne lui succèdent."
