General Note

Botanist who specialised in algae. Born Aberdeen, educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and graduated M.A. from Marischal College in 1830; and became the first Professor of Natural Philosophy, Queen's University, Belfast, 1849-1860; then the first appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Aberdeen, 1860. Author of Flora Abredonensis, 1838; Botanist's Guide to the Counties of Aberdeen...1860, Flora of Ulster, 1864.
