Ausgebildet an der Akademie zu Wien (Genre und Historienmalerei), Weiterbildung in Rom; Wohnsitz: Freiburg i. B.; malte vorzugsweise Altarbilder für badische und elsässische Kirchen, daneben auch Porträts, Gelegenheitskompositionen, größere Genre-Aquarelle und eine Reihe humorvoller kleinerer Aquarell-Illustrationen zu Hebels "Allemann. Gedichte"; seit 1852 Großherzoglich Badenscher Hofmaler; die letzten Lebensjahre (ab 1887) verbrachte er in München im Haus seines gleichnamigen Sohnes [Sources: Thieme-Becker]
