Im Bremisch-Schwedischen Krieg diente er 1654 unter Feldmarschall Königsmarck. Während des Krieges gegen Polen 1656 Feldmarschall. einsätze in Ostpreußen und Westpreußen, 1657 gegen Dänemark beordert. Nach dem schwedisch-dänischen Frieden von Roskilde 1658 Generalgouverneur der neugewonnen Provinzen Schonen, Halland und Blekinge. Mitglied des Reichsrats, in dem Schwedens Hochadel die wichtigsten Reichsämter unter sich aufteilte, hoffte Stenbock auf die Berufung zum Reichsmarschall. 1664 Reichsadmiral.'
