General Note

Scottish Episcopal clergyman and religious controversialist. Born Forgue, Aberdeenshire 1649. Educated King's Coll., c.1662, M.A. 1666. Regent King's Coll., 1673. Ordained minister at Forgue 1674. Translated to St Machar, Old Aberdeen 1679. D.D. between 1679 and 1683. Translated to St Nicholas, 1683. Deprived of his benefice 1693 for refusing to pray for King William and Queen Mary. Approved as a fellow of the Royal Society 1695 but never elected. Published An Apology for Madame Antonia Bourignon (1699) - condemned by the General Assembly and deposed from exercising any ministerial office. Also published Opera Johannes Forbesii (1702-3), The Case of the Episcopal Clergy (1703). Took possession of St Nicholas on Jacobite authority 1715, arrested Mar 1716, deposed again June 1716, escaped and went to the Netherlands Oct 1716. Matriculated Leiden 1716. Returned to Scotland 1720. Died Aberdeen 1733.
