English studierte Jura und Theologie, bekam dann Zweifel an der christlichen Theologie und wurde aufgrund seines Buches "The Grounds of Christianity Examined" 1814 exkommuniziert. 1815 reiste er als Offizier der Marine nach Ägypten, wo er kurz nach seiner Ankunft zum Islam konvertierte. Unter Ismail Pascha nahm er an einer Nilexpedition teil. Danach trat er in den diplomatischen Dienst der Vereinigten Staaten in der Levante ein, bevor er 1827 in die Vereinigten Staaten zurückkehrte.'
