En apprentissage à Londres chez le libraire (affilié à la communauté des merciers) Robert Littlebury d'oct. 1654 à nov. 1661, il s'établit libraire dès 1666. Il est l'un des premiers libraires à pratiquer la vente aux enchères de livres à partir des années 1670. À l'invitation de John Fell, évêque d'Oxford, établit une imprimerie à Oxford avec 3 autres libraires londoniens, notamment pour la publication de \"The English Atlas\" à partir de 1680. Enrichi, il se lance vers 1683 dans des spéculations immobilières à Westminster, perd de l'argent, et doit commencer à revendre son fonds de livres, d'atlas et de planches en 1685. Poursuivi par son cousin et créancier le libraire Adiel Mill, il est finalement emprisonné pour dettes à Londres (prison de Fleet Street) le 20 avril 1689. Déclaré failli à cette date, il serait resté 7 ans en prison avant de tenter à sa sortie de remonter sa librairie. Dès 1691, publie un récit de ses mésaventures qui est aussi une enquête menée dans tout le pays sur la condition des détenus pour dettes : \"The Cry of the oppressed, being a true and tragical account...\". Auteur également de : \"A Letter from Moses Pitt to the authour of a book intituled Some Discourses upon Dr. Burnet...\" (1695) et \"An Account of one Ann Jefferies now living in the county of Cornwall...\" (1696). Décédé en 1697, avant le 8 oct. (veuve attestée)"
