Trouvé dansGK55. — DNB=Kersey, John, 1616-1690?; bapt. 1616.11.23, mathematician. Kersey's method of algebra was employed in Cocker's 'Arithmetic' of 1703. Kersey is said to have d. about 1677, but the date must be later, as the 8th ed. of Wingate was edited by him in 1683. In the 10th, published in 1699, he is spoken of as 'late teacher of the mathematics'. — MP1 p.219=Kersey, John, 1616-77; settled in London as a practical surveyor and teacher of mathematics working meanwhile at his treatise on algebra in Charles Street. Kersey taught opposite the White Lion, near the Piazza of Covent Garden and is recorded as dying in the Parish of St. Paul, Covent Garden, in 1677. The John Kersey who is mentioned as teacher of mathematics in Chandoise Street, off St. Martin's Lane in 1697, must thereford have been his son and successor.
