depiction of ...
The self-portrait of the painter Johannes Aquila in Martjanci, northeastern Slovenia. It is located on the southern wall of the presbyterium in St. Martin's Church in Martjanci and dates to 1392. It is the oldest self-portrait in Slovenia and along with Aquila's self-portrait in Velemér, western Hungary, among the oldest in Europe. The Latin inscription reads "Omnes s(anct)i. orate. p(rom)e Johanne Aquile pictore", which means: "All the saints, pray for me, Johannes Aquila [John the Ev.], the painter." The coat of arms is the personal coat of arms of the painter and has the letter A inscribed on it.
