His father left the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the spring of 1630, and John stayed behind to care for his stepmother, Margaret (Tyndal) Winthrop, and the Winthrop children, as well as his father's businesses. He was governor of the Colony of Connecticut in 1657, and from 1659 to 1676.
