Bereits zu dieser Zeit unternahm er erste Expeditionen ins Gebiet des heutigen Namibia und Botswana. 1850-1851 Maler für die britische Armee. 1852 kehrte Baines in seine Heimatstadt zurück, wo er seine Werke ausstellte und seine Erfahrungen in Vorlesungen weitergab. 1855-1857 Maler und Materialverwalter auf einer Expedition durch Nordaustralien. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus Australien wurde er Mitglied der Royal Geographical Society. 1858 begleitete Baines David Livingstone auf seiner Expedition entlang des Sambesi. 1861-1862 erneut Expedition durch das Gebiet des heutigen Namibia und Botswana, 1864 Expedition nach Südwestafrika, 1869 nach Simbabwe.
