Philosopher, poet and amateur musician, won a bursary to Marischal Coll. Aged 14, graduated MA 1753, Professor of moral philosophy and logic Marischal Coll. 1760, LLD King's Coll. Aberdeen 1770, librarian of Marischal Coll. 1770-3, 1781-4, 1794-6, honorary degree from Oxford 1773, one of the founding members of the Philosophical Society of Aberdeen.
