Poeta latino alessandrineggiante, fece una duplice carriera politica e letteraria al fianco di Ottaviano, partecipò alla battaglia di Azio e fu prefetto d'Egitto. Processato e condannato dal Senato all'esilio e alla confisca dei beni, per aver preso un atteggiamento poco rispettoso nei confronti del principe, si uccise. Nato a Forum Iulii (Fréjus) nel 69 a.C. morì nel 26 a.C.
